Practical Leadership & Management Course for Doctors

Practical medical leadership and management course for doctors, delivered as a 1-day interactive workshop. Designed to help you get things done through organising people, projects, and resources, with a focus on the practical skills required to lead effectively at any stage of your medical career.

The course is accredited by the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM) and maps to the Medical Leadership Competency Framework developed by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and the NHS Leadership Academy, as well as the FMLM Leadership and Management Standards for Medical Professionals.

Key topics covered include:
- Review and root cause analysis — exploring methods of reflection, review, and investigation
- Developing aims and objectives — defining what you want to achieve through analysis
- Developing robust and realistic plans — preparing how yourself and others will take action
- Delivery and implementation — effective delegation, managing procrastination, and handling interruptions
- Time management and personal effectiveness — managing yourself as you manage others

The course takes a highly interactive approach with a maximum of 18 delegates. Your tutor leads hands-on exercises, discussion groups, and engaging presentations, tailored to your specific experience. You learn from both your experienced tutor and fellow delegates, making it practical and immediately applicable to your daily work — from managing research projects and audits to conducting critical incident investigations, preparing business cases, and leading quality improvement initiatives.

The course is suitable for doctors at all levels, whether you have a formal leading role, participate in someone else's project, or work independently. Many doctors use their certificate as evidence of leadership and management training for applications to CT, IMT, or ST programmes, for CESR or CCT achievement, or as evidence for revalidation.
