Frequently Asked Questions — Paediatrics

What is the paediatric training pathway in the UK?
Paediatric training in the UK is a run-through programme from ST1–ST8 (8 years). Trainees rotate through general paediatrics, neonatology, community paediatrics, and various subspecialties. There is a GRID (subspecialty) training period in ST6–ST8.
What exams do paediatric trainees sit?
The MRCPCH (Membership of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health) has three parts: Foundation of Practice (FOP) — an applied knowledge exam; Theory and Science (TAS) — a clinical science exam; and the Clinical Exam — a structured clinical examination. All must be passed for progression.
How competitive is paediatric training?
Paediatrics had a 2025 ST1 competition ratio of 5.63:1. The MSRA is used for selection. Strong candidates have paediatric audit, APLS/NLS certification, teaching experience, and ideally progress towards MRCPCH.
What courses help paediatric trainees?
Essential courses include MRCPCH revision courses, APLS (Advanced Paediatric Life Support), NLS (Newborn Life Support), PLS (Paediatric Life Support), simulation training, and child protection/safeguarding courses. Neonatal courses are also valuable.
