Frequently Asked Questions — Radiology

What is the radiology training pathway in the UK?
Clinical Radiology training runs from ST1–ST5 (5 years). Trainees cover all imaging modalities and body systems before subspecialising. Subspecialty interests include neuroradiology, interventional radiology, musculoskeletal, cardiothoracic, and paediatric radiology.
What exams do radiology trainees need to pass?
The FRCR (Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists) has two parts: Part 1 (physics and anatomy — two separate exams) and Part 2A (written, covering all body systems) plus Part 2B (rapid reporting and long cases). Part 1 is typically completed in ST1–ST2.
How competitive is radiology training?
Radiology is very competitive. The 2025 ST1 competition ratio was 11.27:1. Strong candidates have radiology audit/research, relevant anatomy prizes, evidence of teaching, and ideally radiology taster experience. The MSRA is used in selection.
What courses are useful for radiology trainees?
Key courses include FRCR revision courses (Part 1 physics and anatomy, Part 2A/2B), rapid reporting practice, anatomy courses, subspecialty imaging workshops, and interventional radiology skills courses. Online image banks and case review platforms are also essential.
