Frequently Asked Questions — Obs & Gynae

What is the O&G training pathway in the UK?
O&G specialty training runs from ST1–ST7 (7 years). Trainees rotate through obstetrics, gynaecology, and subspecialty areas including maternal–fetal medicine, reproductive medicine, and gynaecological oncology. There are also Academic Clinical Fellowship opportunities.
What exams do O&G trainees sit?
The MRCOG (Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists) has three parts: Part 1 (basic sciences SBA), Part 2 (clinical SBA/EMQ), and Part 3 (clinical assessment — structured discussion, simulated patient tasks). Part 1 is typically attempted during ST1–ST2.
How competitive is O&G training?
O&G is very competitive. The 2025 ST1 competition ratio was 16.65:1, making it one of the most competitive specialties. Key differentiators include MRCOG Part 1, O&G-specific audit, simulation training, and evidence of commitment to the specialty. The MSRA is used in the selection process.
What courses help O&G trainees?
Popular courses include MRCOG revision courses (all three parts), operative skills workshops (laparoscopy, hysteroscopy), fetal monitoring courses (like the RCOG eFM), ALSO/PROMPT courses, and advanced labour ward management training.
