Frequently Asked Questions — General Practice

What is the GP training pathway in the UK?
GP specialty training (GPST) is a 3-year programme (ST1–ST3). Trainees rotate through hospital posts and GP placements. After completing training and passing the MRCGP, doctors receive a CCT and can work as independent GPs. There are also academic GP training options.
What exams do GP trainees need to pass?
The MRCGP (Membership of the Royal College of General Practitioners) has three components: Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) — a computer-based MCQ paper; Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA) — a simulated surgery OSCE; and Workplace Based Assessment (WPBA) — portfolio-based assessment throughout training.
How competitive is GP training?
GP training has become more competitive. The 2025 ST1 competition ratio was 4.91:1 nationally, with popular deaneries (London, South East) significantly higher. The selection process uses the Multi-Specialty Recruitment Assessment (MSRA) as its primary tool.
What courses are valuable for GP trainees?
Popular courses include AKT and CSA revision courses, clinical examination skills workshops, minor surgery courses, joint injection courses, and sessional GP update courses. Question banks are particularly useful for AKT preparation.
