About this course
The Acute Procedures & Resus Skills Day is an intensive, practical training course delivered by Manchester Medical Academy. Designed in response to real clinician demand, this course focuses on essential bedside procedures used in acute and emergency settings. Through hands-on simulation, expert-led teaching, and real-life scenarios, you'll develop the confidence and competence needed to perform critical procedures safely and effectively.
This is not a lecture-based course. Instead, you'll gain real-world clinical experience in one day through small group learning with personalised feedback from consultant-led instructors. The teaching style combines hands-on simulation with scenario-based training, allowing you to practice repeatedly in a safe, supportive environment. You'll build confidence before on-call shifts and learn practical skills you will actually use in high-pressure clinical situations.
The course covers four core areas:
- Emergency & Resuscitation Skills: cardioversion, transcutaneous pacing, safe sedation practices, and hands-on simulation training
- Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV): machine setup, mask fitting techniques, and troubleshooting ventilation failure
- Ultrasound-Guided Procedures: pleural aspiration and chest drain insertion, ascitic tap, lumbar puncture, with focus on anatomy, landmarks, ultrasound guidance, and avoiding complications
- Emergency Vascular Access: intraosseous access, peripheral rescue techniques, and rapid vascular access in critically unwell patients
