About this course
This intensive two-day course focuses on the core laparoscopic surgery skills and theoretical knowledge essential for many surgical disciplines. Delivered in a safe, simulated environment at the Bjorn Saven Centre for Surgical Education in London, participants work with high-quality laparoscopic equipment, specifically designed benchtop models, and learn a variety of knotting and suturing techniques. Highly experienced faculty provide individual feedback and mentoring throughout.
This blended course features the PGCert Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) module and practice for the LapPass® assessment. You will be awarded four PGCert credits by completing the two-day face-to-face course and an additional six PGCert credits by completing the e-learning within the course, totalling 10 PGCert credits. The course is supported by Karl Storz and Molnlycke.
Before the course, you are strongly advised to complete e-learning content (achieving 75% in each session) and watch course videos. Day 1 introduces basic laparoscopic principles including grasping, cutting, dissection, clipping, Roeder knot-tying and intracorporeal suturing, with a discussion and feedback session. Day 2 features simulated procedures (perforated ulcer repair, appendicectomy, cholecystectomy), an Observed Structured Assessment of Technical Skill (OSATS) of needle handling and suturing skills, and practical suturing on banana skin models.
The course encourages post-course practice and maintenance of skills through the LapPass® certificate offered by the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALSGBI). RCS England members receive a 10% discount (£94.50) on Core Lap courses. ALSGBI members who attend can claim a free enrolment on a Professional Passport course or a 3-credit PGCert module.
