About this course
The Primary FRCA SBA Course is an intensive 60-hour revision course run by the Mersey School of Anaesthesia for anaesthetists preparing for the November 2026 Primary FRCA Examination. The course takes place over 6 days (11th–16th October 2026) at Village Hotel, Whiston, with long days running from 08:00 to 20:00, requiring full-time attendance and commitment.
This is not a course of SBA practice or question memorisation. Instead, it focuses on deep question analysis and collaborative group discussion across five key topic areas: Physics & Measurement Equipment, Physiology, Pharmacology, Clinical, and Statistics. The course has no didactic input — you are expected to come ready to learn through active group engagement rather than passive teaching. The course materials and group work are designed to help you gain sound, thorough understanding of topics and themes similar to those in the actual exam, enabling you to make appropriate judgements under examination conditions.
Course attendance is strictly limited to 72 places and restricted to those on the threshold of the November 2026 Primary FRCA Examination who have already completed substantial revision. Applicants must be able to attend the entire course and be present before 11:00 on Sunday, with all leave and travel arrangements already in place.
Effective group work is central to the course design and success. The MSA emphasises that this is a collaborative learning environment, not a course for independent revision or private study. Those who do not engage with their group or who wish to work independently will be asked to leave. Participants frequently report that the intensive immersion in group discussion, away from home and work distractions, with like-minded colleagues, enables them to cover far more material than they could through solo revision.
