About this course
The Primary FRCA Viva Course is an intensive, exam-focused preparation course run by Mersey School of Anaesthesia (MSA) for anaesthetics trainees preparing for the FRCA Primary SOE (Structured Oral Exam). The course is delivered at the Village Hotel, Whiston (near Liverpool), from 11th–13th November 2026, running 13:00 Wednesday to 17:30 Friday.
This is not a revision course — MSA emphasises that candidates must arrive fully prepared, having already completed substantial independent study. The course expects trainees to consider themselves deserving of a pass before attending. Instead, it offers exam technique coaching, exposure to exam-style questions, peer learning opportunities, and structured practice vivas under realistic examination conditions.
The 3-day programme features a "Magic Roundabout" format covering 60 topics across four main domains: 30-minute vivas in Pharmacology & Physiology (as both examiner and candidate), 30-minute vivas in Clinical & Physics/Measurement/Equipment (as both examiner and candidate), introduction to viva technique, insights into the examiner perspective, and review/reflection of materials. All candidates receive preparatory homework that must be completed before attending.
Critical attendance requirements: You must be available for the full 3-day duration (no part-attendance, late arrivals, or early departures permitted). The course structure depends on all participants being present throughout. You can only attend once. Applicants must confirm they are sitting the imminent Primary FRCA SOE exam in November 2026. Due to extremely high demand (60 places plus 4 reserves), applications will not be accepted from those who have previously failed to attend, attended partially, or are not sitting the exam.
An example schedule is available on the course page. The course is demanding and requires significant engagement, but trainees report it as beneficial. Testimonials are available on the MSA website.
