About this course
This two-day course (originally delivered live on 11–12 July 2025) is now available as a recorded, on-demand video for self-paced learning. It aims to support resident doctors starting postgraduate training in general practice in the UK, helping them understand clinical practice, culture, professional regulation, and governance arrangements in primary care. The course is taught by experienced GPs, GP Training Programme Directors, a senior clinical pharmacist, and an independent social worker.
The course is designed specifically for doctors transitioning into UK General Practice who may have limited exposure to the unique landscape of primary care, whether as International Medical Graduates or Foundation Doctors rotating into GP. It covers key differences in consultation styles, prescribing guidelines, evidence-based clinical practice, supervision structures, e-Portfolio use (FourteenFish), and reflective learning. Beyond clinical content, the course also supports the wider transition into UK life by offering insight into housing, schooling, and childcare.
Course content includes pre-course access to a welcome video from lead tutors, a pre-course workbook with prescribing tasks, and a short video on schooling and childcare in the UK. The recorded video captures all interactive case-based learning, breakout discussions, and scenario analysis from the original live delivery.
All registrants receive inclusion in a 9-month mentoring programme starting August 2025, featuring monthly live webinars and check-ins with mentor groups to support practical learning outcomes, career development, and navigation of the NHS as a new GP trainee.
Learning outcomes include: understanding the structure and function of UK primary care; applying consultation and communication techniques relevant to general practice; managing common clinical presentations using appropriate NHS guidelines; prescribing medications safely, including addictive and mental health medications; and navigating structured supervision, reflective learning, and e-Portfolio use.
