About this course
This highly interactive half-day workshop focuses on mastering ultrasound-guided peripheral venous cannulation to improve first-pass success in challenging patients. Participants receive expert supervision while practising needle guidance and vessel visualisation using high-fidelity ultrasound phantoms and manikins. The course is exclusively focused on ultrasound-guided peripheral intravenous (IV) line placement and related practical skills — not central venous catheter (CVC) placement.
The course format includes a brief orientation and equipment overview, demonstration of ultrasound-guided IV technique, supervised practice on ultrasound phantoms and live models, individual feedback, and optional take-home vascular phantom (£20 extra). It is delivered in a small group format to maximise hands-on experience and personalised feedback.
Learning objectives cover the principles of ultrasound for vascular access and machine optimisation, differentiating veins from arteries, applying in-plane and out-of-plane needle guidance techniques, managing difficult IV access in patients with small, deep or collapsed veins, and recognising and avoiding complications such as arterial puncture and nerve injury.
Successful participants receive a Kung Medics Certificate of Completion with 4 CPD points, suitable for portfolios and CPD records. Tea and light refreshments are included. The course is recommended for doctors in emergency medicine, intensive care, and anaesthetics, as well as nurses and advanced practitioners performing IV access.
