About this course
This practical update course is designed for Consultant General Anaesthetists dealing with complex challenges when on-call, particularly those with on-call responsibilities at District General Hospitals (DGHs) who undertake obstetric and paediatric procedures. The course combines interactive lectures with case scenarios, discussion, and Q&A to provide a comprehensive overview of new and recent evidence in obstetric and paediatric anaesthesia practice.
The course is led by established, practising consultant anaesthetists with extensive experience in advancing peer knowledge and skills nationally and internationally. Content is pitched at a practical, evidence-based level suitable for the Consultant General Anaesthetist, with top tips and relevant COVID-19 considerations included throughout.
Topics covered include maternal morbidity (MBRRACE update, preeclampsia, obesity, cardiac disease); labour analgesia and anaesthesia (epidural, spinal, CSE techniques, troubleshooting); anaesthesia for operative delivery (topping up epidurals, general anaesthesia key issues, post-caesarean analgesia); obstetric haemorrhage management (utertonics, PPH management, thromboelastometry, clotting disorders); paediatric and neonatal airway management (anatomy, physiology, emergency department cases, difficult intubation); paediatric pre-assessment and new guidance (OSA in children, ENT national guidelines); retrieval and DGH team working; and initial management of the critically ill child (sepsis, trauma, respiratory and cardiac issues).
Lectures include case scenarios and panel discussions covering a broad spectrum of relevant topics in a compressed format. Delegates will identify skills and knowledge gaps relevant to their practice and gain greater confidence in current practice or areas needing review or change.
