About this course
The Update for the General Anaesthetist is a well-established annual course running for 19 years, designed to provide anaesthetists with a comprehensive and stimulating update covering topics highly relevant to day-to-day practice. This on-demand course is delivered through short theory lectures followed by interactive Q&A and discussion sessions, featuring a multidisciplinary faculty of leading anaesthetists and specialists who share expert, evidence-based, and up-to-date information.
The course is organised for all Consultants, SAS doctors, and senior trainees in the general anaesthetic department. It offers a practical focus on enhancing knowledge in anaesthesia and related disciplines, with faculty comprising leading professionals from major UK hospitals who are actively practising and can supply real-world clinical insights. The lectures include a Covid-19/long Covid focus on relevant lessons and experience where applicable.
The three-day programme spans a wide range of topics essential to modern anaesthetic practice:
- Day One: Orthopaedic anaesthesia, obstetrics update, surgical patient care, cardiology and vascular topics, critical emergencies in the ED, trauma care, and frailty in the perioperative setting
- Day Two: Cardiac risk evaluation in non-cardiac surgery, sedation techniques, difficult airway management and updates, renal patient anaesthesia, radiology developments, TIVA and BIS monitoring in modern anaesthesia
- Day Three: Transfer of the critically ill patient, diabetic patient perioperative management, robotic surgery challenges, obesity management, ultrasound for the general anaesthetist, and paediatric anaesthesia update
