About this course
This is the UK's first advanced paediatric PoCUS course that focuses on applications of ultrasound in the acute paediatric setting beyond the basics. Designed for clinicians who already have a foundation in paediatric ultrasound and want to develop greater confidence, consistency, and judgement in lung, cardiac, and abdominal scanning, this one-day course builds on foundational skills with an emphasis on better clinical judgement rather than simply obtaining more views.
Teaching combines supervised hands-on scanning, focused lectures, interactive case-based discussions, engaging quizzes, and a dedicated Q&A session to discuss local challenges and real-world dilemmas. There is a strong emphasis on supervised scanning with expert feedback throughout, and the day concludes with an extended practical session including the opportunity to scan paediatric models.
The course covers structured and systematic lung assessment including scoring approaches and protocols for acute dyspnoea; cardiac ultrasound including M-mode, colour, and Doppler principles, qualitative assessment of left ventricular function, basic valve pathology, and right heart assessment; abdominal ultrasound covering extended normal anatomy and common pitfalls; and clinical governance in paediatric PoCUS including scope of practice, documentation, risk management, and safe integration into care pathways.
