About this course
This highly interactive, case-based study day is designed for anaesthetists and perioperative doctors managing complex cardiothoracic patients in non-cardiac settings. Led by leading specialists in cardiothoracic anaesthesia and perioperative medicine, the course enhances confidence in managing high-risk cardiac patients outside specialist centres through real-world clinical scenarios, expert-led discussions, and interactive decision-making exercises.
The course covers seven major topics spanning the perioperative management of cardiothoracic patients. Participants will engage with managing post-heart and lung transplant patients for non-cardiac surgery, high-risk valvular pathologies including severe aortic stenosis and mitral regurgitation, right ventricular failure and pulmonary hypertension, end-stage heart failure and LVAD management, perioperative anticoagulation and antiplatelets, invasive versus non-invasive monitoring strategies, and one-lung ventilation principles and troubleshooting.
The day runs 09:00–17:00 as an online interactive course with coffee and lunch breaks built in. It features live teaching from an expert faculty including cardiothoracic anaesthetists from Royal Papworth Hospital, a consultant cardiologist, and leading international specialists. Participants will engage in interactive clinical scenarios, live Q&A sessions, panel discussions, and decision-making exercises to apply knowledge in real time.
The course is CPD-approved for 6 CPD hours by RCSEd. Certificates will be provided at the end of the day. Meeting details and the video link will be provided by email prior to the course date.
