FAMUS (Focused Acute Medicine Ultrasound) Course

FAMUS (Focused Acute Medicine Ultrasound) is the point-of-care ultrasound standard created specifically for Acute Medicine physicians to aid the management of the acutely unwell adult patient. It is endorsed by the Society for Acute Medicine and recognised by the AIM training committee as a specialist skill. This one-day course has been approved by FAMUS and is intended to deliver all of the components required for accreditation.

The course is led by Acute Physicians with extensive experience in Point-of-Care Ultrasound (PoCUS). It consists of alternating presentations, live demonstrations and practical sessions with approximately four hours of hands-on scanning time across the day. Participants scan on healthy individuals in groups of four with a faculty supervisor, and have access to a range of other systems and training devices during practical sessions, including hand-held devices (Butterfly IQs, Vscan and Sonostar), scannable manikins, and a state-of-the-art simulator with a wide range of pathologies.

The course covers the following topics:

• The FAMUS syllabus and accreditation process
• Basic ultrasound physics and knobology
• Thoracic imaging
• Abdominal and renal scanning
• DVT and peripheral vascular scanning
• Introduction to echocardiography with practical experience of cardiac scanning (additional to FAMUS curriculum)

After registering with the FAMUS administrator, the Society for Acute Medicine recommends attending a FAMUS-approved course to provide a solid foundation for your accreditation journey. Ideally, you should attend your course within 3 months of your first supervised scan.
